Last week the long list for the British Dressage Team, for the European Pony Championships this summer, was announced.
For those who are interested in dressage pony breeding, here is a little info on the selected ponies bloodlines:
Sofia James has been longlisted with Next Black Magic and Steendieks Cadillac, both owned by Janet Oliver and Katie-Oliver Games.
Next Black Magic's sire is Nabucco R, which goes back to some German jumping pony lines such as Nantano and Durello.
Both the sire and dam's lines of Next Black Magic have some Welsh influence, which isn't uncommon for German Riding Ponies.
Steendieks Caillac's sire is the FS Champion de Luxe son FS Chambertin. His paternal half brother, Steendieks Cunningham, also competes at FEI level for Norway.
Ella Glennon has been longlisted riding Debbie Glennon's Amden Supreme Golden Dancer.
His dam, MM Sweet Fancy has been a brilliant broodmare and FEI dressage pony for Maxted Massey Stud, based in Cambridge. Her eldest offspring, MM Sweet Pea was exported to Canada as a hunter jumper pony.
Amden Supreme Golden Dancer's sire is Dating AT, who of course needs no introduction.
Fi Grabham has been longlisted on Hilkens Showgirl, owned by Shirley Rixon. Showgirl has already participated at the 2022 and 2021 European Pony Championships ridden by Ruby Hughes.
Showgirl is another German bred pony, by the Dance Star AT son, Driedimensional I AT out of an FS Champion de Luxe mare, Sweet Cream K. Sweet Cream K's has had quite a few notable offspring including Hilkens Sweet Energy, who was exported to Australia by Tina Barker and now owned by Jodie Luck. Sweet Cream also bred 3 foals for British Breeder Jo Wright.
Myles Graham has been longlisted riding Caron Robert's Dresscode Cocktail, by Top Carolos Cassini, who is also an FS Champion de Luxe grandson.
Abigail Gray has been longlisted riding two Caesar 171 sons - Godrics Campeggio, owned by Samantha Brown and her own George Clooney B.S. Both ponies were bred in the UK.
Caesar 171 is probably the most successful British based dressage pony sire, having three offspring who have competed at the European Pony Championships (including George Clooney) and many additional FEI ponies. Caesar 171 also was team silver & bronze at the Europeans himself in the 2000's. He sadly passed away last spring.

Evie Head, the youngest rider on the longlist at only 12 years old, is riding her own Dutch-bred Brouwershaven Leonie. Her sire, Heidehof's Don Diego, also has an extensive record at FEI level ridden by the Dutch.
Leonie is a maternal half sister to Brouwershaven Uthopia II, who has also competed twice at the Europeans, and Brouwershaven Jasper, who is also longlisted for team GB (see below)

Demi Howard-Cartwright has been longlisted on her own Fin C WE and Rickie Zayee's Don de Luxe.
Fin C WE's dam is a Hanoverian, and his sire, Famos, has full welsh breeding, although he is registered as a German Riding Pony.
Don de Luxe is another pony with top German breeding, being a direct son of FS Champion de Luxe (who has already sired at least 7 ponies who have competed at the Europeans), out of a Dornik B mare. Dornik B was also a four time European Pony Champion.
Fleur Pocock is also longlisted riding her own Brouwershaven Jasper, who has the same dam as Brouwershaven Leonie, who is mentioned above.
Jasper's sire, Valerio, is by Hagelkruis Valentijn, who was also a successful FEI pony for team GB.
Isla Sully is longlisted riding Cassandra Sully's Reitland's Don Totilas, who is by the Dutch stallion Diamond out of a German Riding Pony mare Chipsy, who is also the dam of 'Real Nice Boy' who has competed twice at the European Pony Championships for Italy.
