British breeders have long been competing with their European counterparts for the attention of UK buyers. For sport horses and sport ponies alike, there appears to be a widespread belief that if you want the best youngstock, you need to look across the water, either to Ireland or continental Europe, rather than within British borders. But is the issue really one of breeding quality, or simply one of marketing?
As discussed in my Master's thesis, marketing may be a far bigger factor than many people realise. Countries such as Ireland and Germany undoubtedly benefit from support structures that are difficult for British breeders to compete with, whether through breeding schemes, grants, or state studs. Yet when comparing the asking prices of young sport ponies advertised in Europe with those advertised in Britain, I rarely find a dramatic difference. Once transport and import costs are added, it becomes increasingly difficult to argue that comparable stock cannot be found here in the UK.
One argument I frequently hear from buyers is that countries such as Germany and the Netherlands offer a concentration of breeders that simply does not exist in Britain. The attraction is obvious; spend a day driving from stud to stud and view dozens of ponies in a relatively small area. However, I am not entirely convinced that this is unique to mainland Europe.
To test this theory, I mapped out a simple day trip around my local area of West Wales. Within less than an hour's drive, it is possible to visit four sport pony breeders, view a wide variety of youngstock, and gain an insight into the breeding programmes behind them. I've included the stock currently available from each stud, along with details of the foals expected next year. Combined with easy access to the Brecon Beacons (Bannau Brycheiniog), Snowdonia (Eryri), beautiful coastlines and castles, and countless renowned Welsh Pony and Cob studs, many of which also offer part-breds for sale, it might just make for the perfect pony enthusiast's weekend away. Alongside stud farm recommendations, I'm equally happy to recommend the best beaches, castles and walks in the area to anyone who is considering the trip!
